Who we are

The Dartmouth Initiative for Energy and Communication Transformation prioritizes research that leverages insights from neuroscience, psychology, and economics to understand how different citizens respond to climate and energy communications. Our interdisciplinary group’s primary initiative is to identify new opportunities to enhance public understanding of climate change and increase engagement with climate solutions. By applying theories from these disciplines, researchers can analyze how various factors, such as cognitive biases, emotional responses, and economic considerations, influence individuals' perceptions and behaviors of climate change.

The initiative's approach recognizes that different segments of the population may respond differently to climate communications based on their unique neural, psychological, and socioeconomic profiles. For instance, neuroeconomic studies have revealed how brain activation patterns correlate with sustainable decision-making, providing insights into effective messaging strategies. Additionally, the initiative explores how trusted messengers, such as local news sources, medical professionals, and community leaders, can more effectively communicate climate information and motivate action.

By combining these interdisciplinary approaches, Dartmouth's initiative aims to develop tailored communication strategies that resonate with diverse audiences, addressing potential barriers to climate action and promoting engagement with sustainable solutions across various demographic groups.
